Hi all, great forum. We are in the middle of building a home in an HOA community, the metal roof (Kynar finish) went on, and now we are getting complaints of glare and we may have to repaint it or replace it. Our contractor says the glare will go down in 6-12 months with weathering. Do you agree, and if so any data available on how many SRI points glare can drop after a few seasons of weathering? Any other suggestions to reduce the glare? We are not concerned about solar reflectance and this is a pretty cold/temperate zone and the home will never get that warm. Thanks!

A product can have high SRI but low gloss / sheen. Yes, gloss / sheen will diminish some over time. It does depend upon environmental conditions -- how much dirt, pollen in the air and how much dew you get to some degree. So, it is impossible to project. Also, PVDF coatings will likely retain gloss / sheen longer than other coatings. I am sorry there is no way to predict on your roof. Typically sheen will be worst when the sun is behind the house as you look into it -- so it may change some throughout the year as well. Also, heavy rains will have some cleaning effect on the roof. You might contact your roofing manufacturer and see what input they can provide specific to your roof.
