I have read conflicting advice regarding the utility of applying a reflective thermal barrier beneath a standing seam roof. One version advises using an air space between the thermal layer and the roofing. Another advises direct contact between the thermal layer and the roofing. Is there any research to resolve this issue?

An airspace against either side of a radiant barrier enhances its effectiveness dramatically. Internally, my company has done some testing showing some efficacy of a radiant barrier in a tight sandwich of materials but many people would dispute that. And, again, an airspace helps dramatically.
