We bought a brand new home 4 months ago and a tornado tore off part of the roof last week. New roofer found that there is no felt or tar paper under the metal. He was alarmed and said no reputable roofer would skip this step. Builder admits they made that shortcut on 3 homes but says it is fine because he placed butyl tape on the seams. Is that really okay?
The roof supply place now tells us that the metal that was used should not be used for a roof. They say it is suitable for siding. It is 26 gauge metal. Should that be okay for a roof?

I am sorry for what you have run into. Based upon the information you have provided, I have two thoughts. 1) National building codes require underlayment. There are reasons they do that. I always require it, even in re-roofing cases where the old shingles are left in place. 2) I would never ever condone using any product outside of the scope recommended by its manufacturers / supplier. Again, there are reasons for limitations on how products should be used. Generally speaking, manufacturers would love to sell more product but they place limitations for reasons.
