HOT in AZ!: "Hello, Thank you for your time. I just moved into ..." - L M (7/6/2017) | I Have An Existing Metal Roof and Have A Question

Hello, Thank you for your time. I just moved into a rental unit and the roof over the patio is some type of metal paneling. We've had a very warm season here in AZ with temps hitting 112F almost daily. This heats the metal to very, high levels. I haven't measured the actual temperature, but it would probably sear skin. This makes the whole back patio very hot and has already killed 3 of my hot pepper plants. Does anyone have any suggestions as to keep this thing cool? Paint? Sunshades? Could simply laying cloth over top keep this thing somewhat cool? I'm not shooting for cold, but this thing is simple a heat magnet and I need to temper its abilities! Thanks everyone! What is the color of the top side? Painting it to be as bright white as possible will help. Other than that, you could insulate from the bottom side, perhaps with spray insulation. Hi Todd, Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. The top is the same color as the bottom; a sort of ugly off-white. I would cover it with aluminum foil if that would work, but I am directly in the flight path for planes landing at our airport. What type of spray insulation do you recommend? There is a place called PDI in Scottsdale where you can get elastomeric roof coating that is superior to Ohenry's (what they sell at home depot). Wash your roof with TSP and let it dry before you roll it on. I have a mobile home with a metal roof and could feel the difference immediately 10 to 15 degrees. You could also try insulating under the roof with the blue foam sheeting.
