Hi, I just had a brand new metal roof installed. I've never had one before so don't know if the installers were careless or if this is normal but there are many scratches down to the metal all over the roof. I am worried about rust and also wondering if we try to sell our house -- will they ask us to repaint the roof even though it is brand new? The installer said they would bring over a paint "pen" and touch up but there are so many little scratches all over that it seems impossible. Should I expect a brand new roof to be virtually scratch-free? Not sure how much to complain. Thanks! Some scratches are to be expected and unavoidable. Ones clear through to the metal should be touched up. If you're concerned that your amount of scratching is more than is to be expected, please contact the manufacturer of your roofing or feel free to email photos to me for my input. [email protected] The base metal should by the way have a protective galvalume or galvanized coating on it for rust resistance. Julie, Some scratches are unavoidable but it is tough to offer any solid assessment without seeing the scratches. Do you have any pictures you can post up? I must take a stand against any scratches. They should and can be avoided. 'Scratches' that show primer or shiny metal are gouges and in acid rain area will lead to premature failure of the steel roof. Panels that are gouged need to be replaced. I agree Dick. I was referring to more of the small surface scratches that may be even be experienced in forming of the panel that do not penetrate the finish but are purely surface abrasions. I just had a metal roof done and am experiencing the same problem with scratches. There are patches of cover up paint leading across a certain row where a section was put up to stabilize the workers. I have asked for those sections to be replaced. My concern is that being an interlocking metal roof how feasible is this and does it jeopardize the integrity of the entire roof. In other words, can they remove sections of an interlocking roof and get it back to the way it should be? Here is a picture of the cover up job. My question is do I have them replace the sections? My worry is if I do the integrity of the interlocking system could be compromised ... and if I don't will I experience a problem later down the line with rust or discoloration of paint. What do you use for touch up? I have a scratch that needs to be covered and replacing isnt an option. What type of paint do i need? Where can i get it? what prep would I need to do? The only information i can get is: 26 AMS Kynar finish Bronze color metal. PVDF Medium Bronze The original installer isnt giving up anymore information than that. I've reached out to AkzoNobel for their help and they are saying without the mfg part number or who's paint it is, it will be very difficult to match.
