When the sun comes out my steel roof pops the whole time the sun is out and then pops until the sun sets. I have had it pop at 2am in the morning and its so loud that it can wake us up. It doesn't just pop ones or twice is maybe 10 to 15 time a day. The company is saying this is normal. I have had 9 new homes and this is the second one with a metal roof and its the only one that pops.
Is this normal? if not what can be done to fix it. this house is just a year old and it has doing this from the get go. Even when the ambient temp is 40 degrees and the sun comes out it pops and the summer its worse. I need good information and not just a " normal" answer, that a blow off answer.
Thanks
Richard

I am assuming you have a vertical seam steel roof. What style of roof is it -- exposed fastener, "nail" hem, or clip-fastened? Is it an overlap panel, a snap lock panel, or a mechanically seamed panel?

this is what NU- Ray said about my roof in their literature. The roof is on sip panels that are 6 inches thick. I hope this is the information you are looking for
If you have a low-slope
roof, NRM-2000 is the
perfect choice. The panel features a hidden and
floating clip attachment
system with optional factory-injected seam sealant to create a watertight
installation. After the
panel is installed, a final
power seam is made to
the seal the roof. NRM2000 can be ordered in
three widths with texture options to add
visual interest.

Some noise with expansion and contraction is expected. This situation on your home has a lot of "extraordinary" things from the SIP's to the low slope (perhaps) to the possibility of seam in the sealants to the fact that this is a mechanically seamed system. Have you contacted Nu-Ray and asked them to come do a site inspection? There's a chance something is in a bind and contributing to the problem.

The low slop is on the garage and RV port the house is a 4 12 pitch. I have been in contact with the roof and the house contractor. The roof contractor told me that they were told to use a different hold down clip because the length of the panels are 40 + feet long. He has never seen this problem and contacted Nu-Ray and the person he talked to said it was normal ! When I ask him who he talked to and what was this persons position in the company he didn't know. He could have been the janitor for all I or he knows. Thats way I contacted MRA to see if this is normal , because if this were normal then not many people would put up with this. so is it normal? The lower part of the roof seems to pop more than the upper part over the up stairs. It did pop there as well but we have solar panel on the upper part of the roof and they don't make any noise . The main noise is about 4 to 5 feet from the eves, there is a tree that shades part of the roof for part of the day. There is 40 degrees different's between the shad area and the sun part of the roof. I would think the clip would compensate for this.
By the way when the roof was installed they didn't have the machine to crimp the panels at the seam. this was all done by hand tools and I ask the roof contractor how could this be consistent doing it this way and was this the problem. of course the answer was no !!! What are your thoughts on this?

It does not sound normal to me but I'm not there. I just really think you need to contact the manufacturer and see if they can come to the house to review things. I really suspect something is in a bind but, beyond that, I just can't say with any accuracy at all.

If you were to guess what is binding would it be the crimping of the seam or the clips? What is the most logical.

My guess is the roof surface is not perfectly flat and the clips have all been torqued down the same, putting the panels in a bind. But it's only a guess,

Thanks for your help, the sip panels are big but I would guess that if there is a place that's not even it could be between the panel. What I am thinking you are saying is if the roof is uneven and the clips are torqued down the same the clip could bind and pop is that right?
I have made a recording of the popping sound and sent it to the house and roof contractor. In 20 this morning it popped more than 10 times and we aren't talking about a little tink tink of expanding steel, if that's all it was it wouldn't be a problem.

This popping sound seems to be the same issue I am currently dealing with on a clients new home.
It’s a large shed type roof, approximately 40’ up the gable and 60’ across the eave.
It’s got very little slope,2/12 maybe
I installed a 22 gauge mechanical locked standing seam panel 12” wide with 1” rib, it has no striations.
I used slider clips, rolled blue foam under the ribs and did a single fold(90 deg) on all seams.
I wanted to do a double fold but my metal supplier has junk power seamers to use.
The panel eaves are hemmed to the drip, the top cap is an open hem locked to a z closure that is screwed into the actual panel. Gable trip I open hem locked into z metal that is screwed throuh panel .
The roof is producing excessive noise. Sound like a 22 going off in the distance. Similar sound you hear when walking over a standing seam roof stepping on lower flat sections.
I’m guessing the sound is from the panel expanding horizontally not vertically the length of the panel.
My local supplier where I purchased the panels is of no help. They only know how to sell items.
I apologize if I’m high jacking this thread but the topic sounds the same
Any help us much appreciated
Thanks
