Live in Rockies...snow and ice build up on metal roof where there is a valley prevents ice from melting etc. Weight becomes a problem as well as ice jam overhang. Can I put heat tape (cable) or is there a a better recommendation to deal with issue?

What you described can be a difficult area. The first option is to always remove the heat from the attic by making sure the living space does not have air leaks into the attic, and then adding insulation on top of the ceilings, and increasing attic ventilation above that. If the problem persists, then heat cable on top of the roof is likely necessary. There are options for heating beneath the roof but the roof would need to be removed and re-installed.
