I have a tin standing seam roof that I just had repainted. Contractor powerwashed, scraped, spot primed and applied Sherwin Wms. SilverBrite Aluminum paint. Previous paint jobs were Aluminum asphalt with avg. life span of 5-6 years. Contractor and paint rep. say that their paint is not peeling that it is the paint under their paint, and chips show that is true. So the question is why would this happen? Was it the wrong paint over the previous? Should the whole roof have been primed? And what do I do now?

In other words, it really isn't successful to paint over something that is peeling unless that "something" can be completed stripped and the base surface cleaned and primed.

I guess what I don't understand is why it happened, since I have had the roof painted at least 4 times before, and although it was sanded prior to painting, no one pressure washed, but the previous paint lasted 5 years or so, but never peeled within the year.
What do I do now? Cannot replace the roof. Thanks

Oftentimes though adhesion issues are the result of UV penetration of the coating so that probably comes into play in regards to the types of coatings that were there and are now remaining. If you could find a coating that has extremely good UV blocking (and I do not know what that might be), it might do better. Again, in my experience, though it's about impossible to get a peeling surface to stop peeling. I am sorry. You might search out a coatings expert. You may want to talk to Ron Lewarchik -- you can google and find him online as a coatings expert.

I have not been able to get Mr. Lewarchik to respond. Is there someone else? In Maryland, maybe? The roof has been painted several times before, and no paint has peeled off so quickly.
I have not been able to get the Sherwin Williams rep to respond as to what to do next, which is strange. That is not helpful. No one seems to want to say what to do.

I am sorry but, regardless of the exact cause, I just don't hold out much hope at all that the peeling can ever be stopped.
